More and more companies are beginning to jump on the bandwagon of allowing telecommuting as required for their employees. The need for a physical office is reducing, the need for online tools such as SLACK to enable interactions between colleagues is on the rise. When companies begin to focus on the productivity levels of their staff, statistics show that fewer than 7% of remote workers cited not having a manager present as a top productivity blocker. Engineers, according to research are the least likely to cite overworking as a cause of unproductive working.

 

The vast majority of workers choose flexible working for increased freedom, however, as stated in the article, the reasons will vary. Some individuals will desire flexible working to accommodate family, relatives or a achieve a more balanced working life. Research shows that marketers choose to have flexible working to enable them to travel more. Whereas, engineers are more typically prone to desiring flexibility to allow them to pursue a unique opportunity or project.

Working remotely takes time to get used to. Statistics show that those that have worked remotely for 7+ years are much more likely to continue to do that as their career progresses. Those individuals who have only been remotely working for a couple of years are going to struggle with motivation levels initially. It takes time to master the way you work most efficiently.

A staggering 73% of remote workers have only opted to work remotely in the past 4 years. Once again, different industries vary – marketing and creative professionals are much more likely to be adamant they want flexibility whereas as engineers are more likely to consider going back to the office.
