6 ways to succeed in the first few weeks of your new job

Starting a new job is never easy… it often takes time to settle in and get used to the company culture. It can often be difficult to build immediate relationships with your new colleagues… this will come in time, so stick in there. Here are a few tips for making a good impression and succeed in your first few weeks…

• Ask questions. You are new to the company, so it is expected that on your first day you will be keen to ask questions regarding admin and settling in. This also shows that you are interested in the company and are keen to settle in as soon as possible. Go in on your first day bright eyed and bushy tailed, show intuition and drive from the get-go.

• Prioritise tasks. On the first day everything will be new to you, take a notebook and pen to write down the key information you need to remember. Once you have been shown around and have a list of notes… then you can proceed to place each task in order of priority of urgency. The organisation from the get-go will help you make a good impression and thrive in your new role.

• Ask for feedback. When you are doing anything for the first time, you want to be able to improve. Ask fellow colleagues / a senior member of staff to give you feedback on tasks you execute. Criticism – no on loves it but when you are trying to improve at something it is necessary. Don’t take it personally, use it to enhance your skills and future performance.

• Be driven. Don’t wait to be asked to do tasks all
  the time. It is key to be able to have intuition and be able to work yourself. Impress your employer by jumping on tasks immediately and don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. If you suggest something that doesn’t work…well, then you scrap it and think again.

• Get alongside others. Teamwork is key as multiple heads working together usually works better than one. Working well alongside others is a very desirable skill, it not only benefits the output of tasks but will help you settle into the role quicker. Establishing positive working relationships is something I can’t stress enough.

• Having confidence is everything, particularly as you enter a new space which isn’t as comfortable perhaps as the last. Confident individuals come across well, as they tend to have good self-awareness. Show YOURSELF in the best light from the moment you walk in…
